September: Accessibility vs. Accommodations

Accessibility is sometimes thought of as additional steps that content creators need to take so people with disabilities can access information. It can be helpful to broaden the way we think about accessibility to a continuum of experiences. 

  • Inaccessible content excludes some people from having an equivalent experience. 
  • Accommodations are a modification or an adjustment to content which allows a person with a disability to access it.
  • Accessible content provides equitable access for all users. 

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but it takes a lot of time to remediate and make existing content accessible.. The idea is to get to a point where the new content you create is accessible from the get-go to avoid the need for remediation and potential accommodations.
