January: The Perks of Edited Video

The University of Minnesota provides many different tools to stream, record, edit, and host video content. These tools have endless potential to engage students and colleagues, but they can also unintentionally create barriers to learning. One less than obvious suggestion: make shorter videos!

We know from numerous studies that video content is most effective when it is curated, succinct, and saves the time of the user. You can find methods to create blocks of video content in Zoom, or add chapters/bookmarks to your video content in Kaltura.  One can even edit larger lectures into shorter videos with Screencast-O-Matic.

Intentionally designing your videos to be shorter ultimately results in more reusable content as you can more easily package this content into an exercise and assignments in Canvas, which provides students with additional insight into a project.

Per the UMN Site Kaltura: Tips for Reducing Upload Times: Creating Effective Short Recordings:

Decide ahead of time how you will break up what you are presenting. Consider outlining subtopics. If you use a slide deck, insert a slide to introduce a subtopic. Insert another slide that ends a subtopic and serves as a visual reminder to stop recording.

Take the opportunity to summarize important points when ending a subtopic, and introduce the next subtopic when you restart.
